Creating Local Economies

Mercado La Paloma creates opportunities for business ownership and living wage jobs by offering affordable retail spaces, technical assistance, start-up capital, and ongoing support. Our mission is to provide essential goods and services for residents and employees while fostering economic retention within our community.

Since its inception in 2001, Mercado La Paloma has been a launchpad for 43 small businesses and currently supports 14 thriving enterprises, generating over 250 jobs in the local economy. Despite recent economic challenges, our businesses continue to flourish, offering some of the most outstanding services in Los Angeles. Notably, Holbox—a Yucatecan marisquería—has earned a Michelin star, marking the first Michelin star awarded to a restaurant in South Los Angeles and the first ever located within a food hall. Additionally, Holbox and Komal were both featured in the LA Times "101 Best Restaurants in Los Angeles" for 2024. Taqueria Vista Hermosa has also been celebrated by L.A. Taco for serving some of the best al pastor in South Los Angeles.

Many of our entrepreneurs have leveraged their business success to achieve personal milestones, such as purchasing homes, expanding their ventures, and supporting their children’s education. Beyond business, Mercado La Paloma is a vibrant community hub—offering residents access to high-quality goods and services, a welcoming space to gather, and a rich array of cultural and artistic events that celebrate our neighborhood’s diversity and creativity.
