NONPROFITS

The Mercado la Paloma also serves as a community hub with several nonprofit organizations in residence that service the South Los Angeles region.

Esperanza Community Housing Corporation

Esperanza Community Housing Corporation is a social justice non-profit in South Central Los Angeles that achieves long-term, comprehensive community development.  We recognize that Indigenous, Black, and Latino immigrant communities are disproportionately impacted by historical oppression, health disparities, disinvestment and displacement.  Therefore, we develop and preserve affordable housing; elevate health equity and access to care; mobilize for environmental justice; create and protect local economic opportunities; expand engagement in arts and culture; and advocate for policies protecting human rights.  Esperanza works collaboratively to strengthen South Los Angeles.  In all of our actions, Esperanza builds hope with the community.

Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment Institute

A multi-racial, democratic, non-profit community organization that builds power to fight and stand for economic, racial and social justice. We take seriously our commitment to ground-up organizing to build a strong people’s movement that can create transformative community change.

Movement Legal

Movement Legal, formally known as the California Center for Movement Legal Services, is a nonprofit legal advocacy organization that works alongside community organizers and grassroots movements to advance racial, economic, and housing justice across California. Through impact litigation, policy development, and direct legal services, the organization supports tenants, low-income residents, and underserved communities including immigrants and communities of color. Originating as the legal department of the ACCE Institute and later becoming an independent 501(c)(3), Movement Legal focuses on removing legal barriers, defending tenants from eviction, enforcing housing protections, and helping develop innovative legislation that promotes safe, affordable, and climate-resilient housing. By combining legal strategy with community organizing, the organization seeks to empower residents, strengthen civic participation, and secure lasting structural change that protects vulnerable communities and expands access to justice.
